The Making of "Samurai Monk" step by step photos

I approached this painting with one thing in mind, to create a powerful piece that brings out your inner most strength

.

Warrior Monk (Sohei)

The warrior monks were adherents of Buddhism and between the 10th and 16th centuries they were very powerful and were a match for the samurai who courted their military skills but also sought their destruction. They were also at the forefront of technological development and the monks of Negoroji in particular were renowned for their skills with firearms.

Step 1 - background colors using acrylics on canvas, then inking in the dragon

Many layers of paint were used to create a very deep blue sea, and even more layers on top to create the sea foam and white water.

There's a poem written in english, but stylized lettering makes it look like Kanji, the poem says:
"With Dragon I Move Fear to Nonexisting Mindset"

Here you can get an idea of the size, 10ft x 4ft
